I tend to be a stickler for realism at times, too but for games, especially fantasy type games/RPGs, there are certain things that just never will be 100% realistic. That's just the nature of games and the entertainment factor of many games. It's also true for many movies like Star Wars and lightsaber combat and how they do these huge dramatic swings and backswings like they need to put more power behind the lightsaber even though you would NOT need any power behind it because it just automatically "cuts" or burns through almost everything immediately it comes into contact with. Whereas realistically for lightsaber combat, you'd have much smaller and less drastic movements like dueling with a rapier but it doesn't look as "cool", dramatic or flashy on screen.

I think the V blade is the way to go. The inserts are just focusing all the energy in ways that carbon fiber is not optimal for absorbing, where as the v is going to distribute those forces way better. My suggestion is DLSM Metal 3d printing, there's a few sponsors you could get to reduce/eliminate the cost and you can print it in tool steel with a preset edge profile, only a sharpening grind would be required. 3d printing means you have fine control over the entire profile so you can have a U shape inside of the angle to wrap around the composite core and a fine point v on the exterior of the angle. Downside with 3d printing it is its going to have to be in quite a few sections but the upside versus just bending steel into a v is the point could have a lot more material on the inside which will be a blessing when it comes to edge on edge.

The serrations are because beasts have thick tough fur so a regular slashing weapon would have a harder time that a sawing weapon getting through the fur.

Idea. Use a thinner spring steel say 1/8” instead of having edges. Make center spine. Reinforced and fastened to carbon fiber as you have. Heat treat the edges more so you have softer inter skeleton. Think feather.

I've watched this vid a couple of times and I'm still confused. Why would you apologize for making this? Amazon is making the Wheel of Time books in to a not very good show. When I read the books back in the day, I pictured the Heron marked sword to be nearly identical to this blade. This is a great design. It is a sword that a master might use not only to kill opponents, but also defensively to go home at the end of the day. Win

i feel like this whole 3000 dollar katana thing is just a scam for those japanese dick riders to fall into. "traditional methods are weaker" seems like the perfect excuse to go cheap on materials and labor. that sword costs 400 dollars max to manufacture, if they are using real silver hardwares.

Marines fighting those little Japs in the pacific would argue that massive viking warriors would absolutely destroy anything Japan could throw at them in mele/ medieval combat. A bayonet fight was always one sided, storied of boys throwing them from one end of the foxhole to the other with their bayonet no factor. Viking wins.

Maybe make a roughed up metalic blade core with lots of holes and/or truss-like structure so the carbon fiber can bond to layers on the other side of the steel (or other hardenable metal). Not sure what finish the metal should have, but I'd imagine the rougher, the better to prevent delamination.

It’s interesting that they have that garment that has chain mail in specific none covered areas. We have something similar in the military were our deployment tops only has the more stiff flame retarded fabric on the arms but a more breathable fabric were our players carriers are.

Instead of rivets, what about 'rivet holes' that are either stitched/sewn into the blade, or held into the center through carbon fibers?

The command for that attack is block counter heavy, then light. There's an extension with one more light attack that does two more hits

Ik it's more of a cloth, but you should try multiple layers of laminated stab/shark proof cloth with extra kevlar woven into it, crack pot idea but it's worth a shot, but then again I have no clue what I'm talking about

Great Michael! That's awesome! Edit: material science nerd here. They were probably using Nomex, rather than Kevlar. Nomex is another aramid that has better thermal performance than Kevlar (firefighers garb, racing suits, etc.). Similar but slightly different.

You should do a review video of all the sword purchases and what is the best to buy for a personal collection with links to the websites. Doesn't need to be paid. But was looking at starting a personal mid range collection.

I would try starting with a metal blank or cutting it out of a sheet of steel, say 2mm thick (if you want to make it thicker) in the shape of the sword. Then mill out or otherwise remove most of the interior save for some braces from edge to edge spaced about 10 cm apart. Drill or otherwise put holes in the interior and texturize the parts of the blade that need to bond with the epoxy, even hitting it with something like a dremal might work if you needed to save money. Then build your layers and see what you get. I'm not a phd in material science or anything, but it struck me that the epoxy would have had a hard time bonding the carbon fiber to the steel without a rougher surface to adhere to. Also having braces across the edge should keep the blade from dislodging like it did in testing. Hoping for the next one, which should be named BTW! 😁

Why not make like a steel frame like just the cutting edge and fill the entire meat of the blade with carbon fiber?

Now I am afraid to use my handmade Japanese katana. The cheap decorative version bend the same as in this video when I hit a block of wood once, but that was not the real steel. But playing fruit ninja, with all the acid in the apples and oranges certainly would stain the steel as it did with the kitchen knife from the sword Smith.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but Shad said the handle was wrapped in “Ray skin” assuming he means stingray. However traditional katana were wrapped in eel. Is this true for this particular katana as well? Eel or ray? I’m curious.

I think if you add a reinforced handle with an added knuckle guard type thing for more available material as reinforcement, it would reduce maneuverability but it would increase strength

I think due to the size of the sword it would greatly benefit from a similar shape like a great sword... an even greater sword!

I would like to point out the knight and banished knight greatsword from the original elden ring also have a much closer to realistic moveset when two-handing where your swings flow from one to another and you switch from a mid guard to a high guard between each attack. I suggest you check these weapons out, its the only greatsword I use because I always found it rather stupid that most greatswords act like a metal club.
